Black Lives Matter Promotes Black Businesses

The Black Lives Matter movement is making it a little bit easier to find and support Black-owned businesses.

The organization launched a beta version of in partnership with J. Walter Thompson New York.

The website allows people to discover Black-owned businesses throughout the country. Shoppers can search for businesses through categories like health and beauty, entertainment and lifestyle.

“Black-owned businesses have long been a staple in the Black community providing jobs, economic security and a somewhere for us to go and feel seen and safe,” Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors told the Huffington Post. “In these uncertain times, we need these places more than ever.”

J. Walter Thompson’s Chief Creative Officer, Brent Chol, says the company hopes to “reduce the racial disparity that exists in economic well-being through the promotion of Black business ownership.”

The website currently has information for more than 300 businesses. It aims to have a diverse array of Black-owned establishments represented on the site by the end of next year, including non-profits and online stores.
