Was it just plain innocent fun or something more serious? Several members of Lambda Theta Delta, a fraternity at University of California, Irvine attempted to reenact Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie,” but failed miserably and are now accused of being racist, Newsone reports.
The Asian American students danced and lip sync to the R&B hit. Fifty-five seconds into the video, a man donning Blackface appears, supposedly portraying rapper Jay-Z. Darius Obana, the fraternity’s president firmly denies any accusations of racism, saying that the student involved was “just trying to be Jay-Z.”
Obana’s explanation was not received well by all. The Black Student Union has filed complaint with the university’s vice chancellor and has launched an investigation into the incident.
Obana claims the fraternity has apologized for the video on its website and he reached out to the Black Student Union in an attempt to make peace.
