The Associated Press is the latest victim in an attack on major news organizations. On Tuesday, April 23, a group known as the Syrian Electronic Army cracked into AP’s Twitter account. “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured,” read the hoax tweet sent out to AP’s more than a million followers.
AP quickly took down its Twitter account and announced it had been compromised. The message was re-tweeted thousands of times, leading to widespread repercussions in the stock market. The Dow Jones dropped roughly 170 points before quickly recovering after the tweet was determined to be a hoax. The FBI is currently investigating the issue.
