Ancient Species of Human Ancestor Discovered

Geologists say they’ve discovered an ancestor of the human race in South Africa.

“Homo naledi,” was discovered by scientists in 2013. The new species of human relative is believed to have buried its kin.

In addition to “Homo naledi,” researchers found fossils consisting of infants, children, adults and elderly people in a previously isolated cave.

Burials are believed to be a uniquely human practice. The first undisputed burial dates to around 100,000 years ago. Researchers have not be able to date naledi’s fossils.
