Survey: Afro Latinos Likely to Identify As White

A new survey is revealing some interesting statistics about Afro-Latinos and identity in America.

The report, released by the Pew Research Center, reveals that while 24 percent of Latinos in the U.S. identify as Afro-Latino, just 18 percent of that group reports their race as “Black.”

“Identity for U.S. Hispanics is multidimensional and multifaceted,” the report states. “For example, many Hispanics tie their identity to their ancestral countries of origin – Mexico, Cuba, Peru or the Dominican Republic. They may also look to their indigenous roots. Among the many ways Hispanics see their identity is their racial background.”

Thirty-nine percent of Afro-Latinos identified as white alone or white in combination with another race. Twenty-four percent of Afro-Latinos identified as Hispanic for at least one of their races and only 9 percent identified as mixed race.
