Action Item: Search For Missing Autistic Teen

The search is on for 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo, who was last seen running the halls alone at his Queens school before exiting out the door.  He is said to be non-verbal with the mental capacity of a 7-year-old; however, his family is hopeful that he will return safely.

“The number one reason that a child is recovered is because someone saw their photograph so that’s why it’s imperative to get it out there in the public eye,” said Carla Proudfoot of the Maryland Center for Missing and Unidentified Persons.

JETmag.com encourages you to be on the lookout for this innocent boy to help bring him home safely. With a fondness for trains, family members are suggesting that he may have boarded one so the search has spread from just New York alone.

Please read the full article here. The reward for his return is now close to $90,000 and so far, more than 6,700 volunteers have helped with the search for Oquendo. Let’s continue to spread the word far and wide.  And if you have an action item for us, aka a news story that simply begs our community’s attention and assistance, please tell us about it at digitalpitches@ebony.com.  Please include “Action Item” in your e-mail title.
