13-Year-Old Accidentally Kills Self While On Instagram Live
This is a story of how sometimes social media and teenagers can be a bad mix.
A Georgia woman is trying to make sense of the death of her 13-year-old son, Malachi Hemphill, who she found dead in his room from a gun shot wound.
Hemphill’s mother, Shaniqua Stephens, told Atlanta’s NBC 11 her son had just taken out the trash on Monday evening, and 10 minutes later she heard a shot go off.
“I heard a big boom. I couldn’t tell if it was a gun shot or what,” said Stephens. “I just knew that it was something that was wrong.”
Stephens and her daughter raced upstairs calling Hemphill’s name. When he didn’t respond, Stephens kicked down his door and that’s where she saw her son in a pool of blood.
“My daughter screamed and said, ‘Mom turn his phone off!’ As I proceeded to look at his phone he was on Instagram Live,” said Stephens.
Hemphill later died at Grady Hospital. After, between 40 and 50 kids–who were probably watching Hemphill on Instagram Live–showed up to Stephens’ house.
According to Stephens, someone asked Hemphill why he didn’t put a clip in the gun and that’s when the gun went off.
Law enforcement is currently investigating how Hemphill got a gun in his possession. They also asked Stephens for Hemphill’s Instagram name and she didn’t know.
“I couldn’t tell him what Malachi’s Instagram name was because he would make up so many different pages,” said Stephens. “Monitor their phones, just monitor your children. More now than anything.”
