SZA Is a Whimsical Delight in “Supermodel” [VIDEO]
Between SZA and Insecure — and SZA on Insecure, I don’t know if it can get any realer.
Both SZA and Issa Rae have been praised for their transparency and ballsy take on modern-day relationships, and the former returns with a visual for her standout track “Supermodel” off of her debut album Ctrl.
SZA finds her wounds festering on this symbolic bit, exposing her insecurities and heartbreak that eventually led her to revenge. “I’m just getting ugly. All my dirty laundry is on the line,” she shared about the track in a May 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly: “There’s a song where I talk about sleeping with my ex-boyfriend’s friend because he purposefully left me on Valentine’s Day, which will be the first time he hears about it.”
The visual, however, is not as dim. In fact, it’s quite whimsical. Directed by Nabil, SZA is glorified amidst her despair and seems to be glowing in fairy dust. The video starts out in her room before she heads out into the forest. Her love interest appears at random and taunts the TDE singer through out the clip. But little brown fairies arrive as her solace, sprinkling her in their sparkly goodness before they end up at a playground where she shoots explosives from her fingertips at her ex-lover’s feet.
“Supermodel” was featured on last week’s episode of Insecure on Sunday night (July 30). Check out Issa’s and SZA’s tweets below and get into the video above.
We got sent this SZA track before the album came out and I was in LOVEEEE! Lowkey the whole album could be on the show. #InsecureHBO
