JET Staff Shares Favorite Whitney Songs
Even now, it’s hard to believe Whitney Houston is no longer with us. Fortunately, the iconic pop star leaves behind an impressive repertoire of songs that will live on for generations. Below are a few of our favorites:
Editor-in-Chief Mitzi Miller, “Count On Me”
I have been blessed with a wonderful circle of friends who have held me up and pushed me forward for years. They are one of the top reasons that my life always seems so amazing. This song reminds of how lucky I am to be loved by these folks.
Managing Editor Anslem Samuel Rocque, “Greatest Love of All”
This was actually my kindergarden graduation song and one of the first that I knew word for word. There’s actually a video my late grandfather shot of me on VHS singing the song. It’s hilarious because I stopped midway because I messed up the lyrics and started all over from the top. Always the perfectionist, even at 5 years old. But besides the sentimental connection to the song, the lyrics are quite inspiring and pack the same power as they did so many years ago.
Senior Editor S. Tia Brown, “Queen of the Night”
I love the song because it was sexy, powerful and fun.
Senior Editor Marcia A. Talbert, “I Will Always Love You!”
Of Course! I can’t imagine that people would pick a different song.
Copy Chief Deanna Martin-Osuagwu, “One Moment In Time”
If I had to choose one Whitney Houston song that I could listen to over and over again, it would be “One Moment In Time.” The moving lyrics are extra powerful because of her delivery. The song always gives me chills.
Editorial Assistant Miya Williams, “I’m Every Woman”
Although is is a cover of the great Chaka Khan’s hit, I love Whitney’s version of this song. Whenever I listen to it it always makes me feel happy, empowered and proud to be a woman. Plus the “Oh, Oh, Ohhhhhs” are lots of fun to sing along to!
Photo Editor Geoffrey Black, “My Love Is Your Love”
I simply adore Whitney’s “My Love is your love, a sweet funky declaration of the ultimate love and devotion for all times.
Graphic Design Intern Tara Simpson, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”
Mine’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” because I remember being a little kid dancing to it with my older sisters in the living room.
Digital Managing Editor Kyra Kyles, “I’m Every Woman”
Mine is: “I’m Every Woman” due to the empowering message and diversity of beautiful voices. Whitney was at her playful, yet powerful best.
Digital Content Editor L’Oreal Thompson, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”
This was my college roommate’s alarm in the morning. At first, it was kind of annoying, but now it’s become a fun inside joke and we have a blast dancing to it wherever we go! How can you not bust a move and sing along to this one?
Editorial Intern Andrea Watson, “I Will Always Love You”
“I Will Always Love You” because almost anyone who has been in a long term relationship can relate. Her voice is beautiful and serene in this song. Even though it’s sad, there is something peaceful about it if the listener really understands the lyrics and has had to leave someone before. This song is universal.
Editorial Intern Najja Parker, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).” The liveliness and energy of this song is just contagious. This tune definitely makes the “Girls’ Night Out” playlist.
