Today’s Black History Fact: Famous Amos Cookies
Did you know, Famous Amos cookies were originally created by a black man? Wally Amos opened up The Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookie store in Los Angeles, California in 1975. Amos, who originally worked in show business, baked cookies in his spare time to wind down drom work.
Amos came up with the idea to sell his gourmet cookies as an entertainment personality and soon the entrepreneur became known nationwide for his cookies and charisma. Unfortunately, financial troubles forced Amos to sell the company, but that didn’t stop him from baking! Amos partnered up with a Famous Amos distributor and created “Uncle Noname Gourmet Muffins.”
Wally Amos has been a long time advocate of literacy and has written nine books, including The Cookie Never Crumbles.
