30-Day Yoga Challenge
Is your workout routine getting dull? We know the feeling! In this feature, we try out different exercises and give you the scoop.
Workout: 30-Day Yoga Challenge with Erin Motz
What You’ll Need: Internet connection, yoga mat
Fun Factor: 5 out of 5
The Real Deal: Full disclosure: I’ve never really been a big fan of yoga. I tried it a few times in college and it just “didn’t impress me much,” to quote country singer Shania Twain. In fact, yoga bored me.
As a dancer and cheerleader, I was more into cardio and didn’t believe it was a worthwhile workout unless I was sweating. But when my friend posted a 30-Day Yoga Challenge to Facebook, I decided to give the practice another try for two reasons: 1) It’s free!! and 2) I need motivation to get off my lazy bum and do something.
Joining a gym right now is out of question (wayyy too cold to be spending unnecessary time walking outside) and out of my budget ($99/month ? No, thank you). Besides, most gyms are full of those “January Joiners” anyway this time of year.
So, the 30-Day challenge was perfect. You can do anything for 30 days, right? Once you sign up, you’ll receive a free 10-20 minute yoga video every day. Did I mention it’s free?!! And totally doable.
I’d intended to do the videos in the morning, but that meant I would have to wake up at 6:30 aka before the sun. Eww. So, I’m about a week in and I’ve been doing the videos after work to de-stress. I love them! Erin Motz is a wonderful, down-to-earth instructor and I’d love to sign up for one of her classes in real life. #GirlCrush
All you need is a yoga mat. No fancy props necssary here. And it’s perfect for beginner/bad yogis like me! Because you’re doing the videos in the comfort of your home, there’s no one around to judge you for “doing it wrong.” Now, I’ll be honest with you. Just because it’s yoga doesn’t mean it’s easy. Days 4 and 5 kicked my butt. I seriously hate planks. And the day with the crow pose? Yeah, that didn’t happen either.
Check out Day 1’s video below and join me in the 30-Day Yoga Challenge here. You can start (or stop) anytime. Hit me up in the comments or on Twitter at @LTintheCity to let me know how you like (or don’t like) it. #Namaste
