Moving While Black: 5 Tips to Relocating
3. Find the Black community in your new city.
Create a list of possible churches or spiritual places to visit as soon as you move to your new city. It is not imperative that you become deeply involved right away, but making sure you are surrounded by positive energy once you arrive is important. Look up the local fraternities and sorority chapters there. Reach out to the local contact and ask how you can get involved in planning or attending upcoming service projects. If you are a parent, join the local Mocha Moms chapter in your city. Also connect with your local Black alumni group from the university you attended. They will be able to answer questions on great places to eat and shop. Attend their events and volunteer to lead community service projects. This will help you build a community organically.
