‘Model’ Diversity

It’s the first of its kind and it’s happening in London.

While the U.S. continues to battle racial discrimination when it comes to the fashion and modeling industry, an innovative London history graduate working in fashion is defying mainstream standards and launched a diverse modeling agency with clientele that spans every race with the exclusion of White models.

Noticing the lack of color in the booming industry, 26-year-old Nafisa Kaptownwala, created Lorde Inc. and over the course of a year received client placements in magazines in addition to London streetwear brand collaborations.

In an interview with the Guardian, Kaptownla, expressed, “There’s still not a massive demand because this is still a radical idea and people in fashion are not really ready for it. How does that make me feel? In general I think, as a person of colour, you internalise. Creating this agency is a way to channel those feelings.”

The unjust treatment of models has been documented with the most recent coming from South Sudanese model Nykhor Paul who dished a blatant message to the white fashion world.

Lorde Inc. is shining light on beauty of all shades and color. Hopefully, the message and success spreads to the U.S.
