Healthy Food as a Prescription?


So, the old adage about an apple a day keeping the doctor away might get turned on its head.

Under new Obamacare rules, that doctor might well be  “prescribing” you an apple.

With the obesity epidemic disproportionately affecting the Black community, JET couldn’t help but be fascinated by an NPR piece about some physicians prescribing healthy foods, i.e. fruits and vegetables, to their patients in new York City.

Wholesome food as a prescription sounds like a powerful arsenal in the war against high BMIs and like an effort that could be underscored by insurer plan changes under Obamacare, according to a USA Today breakdown of new insurer requirements.
