Fit Friday: Is Food Really the Issue?

As a fitness professional, I have encountered many clients who are perplexed about their nagging weight issues. In a majority of cases, I’ve discovered that many of my clients progressively put on weight after trauma, psychological issues, or a significant struggle.

Weight gain is not always an issue tied to food consumption. While many people are emotional eaters, the larger aspect of our weight struggles usually stems from our lifestyles.  Here are three great ways to determine if food is really the issue.

For one week, create a food journal detailing your meals from Breakfast to Dinner.

A food journal is the best way to learn about your eating habits. Once you’ve created a journal, you can look into hiring a nutritionist or dietitian that can teach you a healthier way to eat. There’s also tons of free apps that will help you to track your meals. My Fitness Pal is a good one that you can conveniently use via your smartphone. Remember, eating healthier foods encourages weight loss and greater quality of life.

Keep track of your weekly tasks with a calendar.

What time do you wake up? Do you have to get the kids ready for school? Have you eaten breakfast?  What time did you eat dinner? These are some of the questions that will help uncover the root of your food drama. Based on these questions, you can determine your emotional triggers and what usually pushes towards downing a glass of wine.

Get the help that you need!

Sometimes our issues are much bigger than we realize. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion or sitting down with a therapist to help stabilize your emotional state. It is pointless to invest in your physical health if your mental health is in question.
