JET:  Give a little insight on your vintage shop Shirley + Alice

Khalilah: My vintage shop was a dream I envisioned when I moved to NY that grew from my love of vintage and thrifting with my mom back home, in Baltimore. We started in my husbands’ Gallery, Richard Beavers Gallery, in 2010 with pop-up shops and then moved to a showroom in the Stuyvesant Mansion in Bedstuy. About two years later, a space became available one block from my husband’s gallery, and here we are!

I see Shirley + Alice as a staple where you could find cool vintage and  unique indie designers, along with having the feeling of hanging out at your friends house, raiding their closet and just enjoying a great atmosphere! I love meeting and interacting with all of our customers, and creating an environment where they can shop, be inspired and feel like themselves.

JET: Tell us a little more about your celebrity styling?

Khalilah: I got started styling while I worked in retail in NYC… when stylist would come in to pull, I would ask if they needed assistance, and that’s how I got started. Over the years, I’ve worked on countless photo shoots, videos, and clients that I wouldn’t have thought in my wildest dreams  I would encounter.

Currently, I’m working with athletes, having a career as I do and the experiences I have is at times surreal, at times a bit stressful, but overall fun and eventful. My client list includes; Carmelo Anthony, Matt Harvey, Jimmy butler, and Brandon Bass.

JET: What are some of your personal goals?

  • To be more organized
  • To actually wear the clothes/shoes in my closet
  • To change my mindset to less is more.. I tend to have more of everything
  • To spend more time with my family and friends
  • To become less of a procrastinator

JET: What are five things people don’t know about you?

  • I love old school cars
  • I hate wearing socks but I love collecting them
  • I get a rush out of beating the clock
  • I love event planning and interior design.. those will prob be my third and fourth careers
  • I pray before takeoff of every flight I’m on
