Dorinda Walker is a director of Women and Multicultural Marketing for Prudential’s U.S. Businesses. In this position, Walker is responsible for supporting U.S. businesses to plan and execute profitable growth strategies among diverse consumer segments. Her career has had a particular focus on expanding new business opportunities among diverse markets.

The BOSS Network: Walk us through your journey to success. How did you get to this point?

DW: My journey to success has been grounded in my ability to link my talent, or as I like to describe it, “my gifts”, to opportunities that provide me personal fulfillment. My gifts are my ability to listen, build strong relationships, and connect dots, which contributes to my innate skill to get things done. I don’t place limits on myself or what I am capable of achieving. I am driven by opportunities to play a part in making a positive impact. These skills, coupled with my passion to help others, have been invaluable in helping me to succeed in a competitive corporate environment.

TBN: What do you do to stay on top of your game professionally?

DW: It’s important for me to keep up with trends and the competitive landscape, so I attend industry conferences and read. A lot. It helps me gain a better understanding of what other companies are doing to engage consumers. I also rely on strong internal and external networks, which helps me grow both professionally and personally.

TBN:
How do you balance your personal life with your professional?

DW: I am blessed to be happily married to a wonderful husband for 22 years, and he supports my dreams. We both love our jobs, but we also know God and family come first. He contributes equally and sometimes overtime to assist with the needs of my children, family, extended family and household. We balance each other really well. We understand that if we are not at our best, both individually and as a couple, we are no good to others. I am also fortunate to work for a company that encourages work/life balance.

TBN: What advice would you give to a budding entrepreneur or career woman?

DW: Spend your time and efforts on pursuing things that make you happy and personally fulfilled. Don’t waste time trying to live up to the expectations of others. Once you find inner peace and connect with your sense of purpose, things will fall into place. Doors will open, and your dreams will expand far greater than you could have ever imagined.

TBN: How would you define your personal brand?

DW: Through a combination of passion, communication, collaboration, and entrepreneurial spirit, I inspire and create new business opportunities, viable solutions and positive results.

TBN: What does being a BOSS mean to you?

DW: I define a BOSS as a person who is grounded in positivity, and not afraid to let their faith be bigger than their fear. A BOSS demonstrates an ability to lead and inspire others. A BOSS takes calculated risks, and has courage and ambition. This quote by Nora Roberts sums it up for me: “If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward you’re always in the same place.”
