Wedding Gowns Inspired by Scandal
Welcome to Wedding Wisdom! Every week, JET experts will help you plan your dream nuptials from engagement to “I do.” This week, wedding planner and bride-to-be Tami Smallwood, CEO of blush|WEDDING & EVENT PLANNING FIRM, gives advice on choosing wedding gowns to fit your focus.
If you haven’t heard, our favorite “It girl” Kerry Washington tied the knot with NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha last June in Blaine County, Idaho. The wedding was a secret, so much in fact, not even her Scandal co-stars knew of her nuptials. It’s obvious Kerry has picked up a few pointers from her character Olivia Pope.
We may never see our Kerry in her wedding gown or know what type of bouquet she had, but we can use our imagination to dress her alter ego Olivia Pope for her big day. We have to first figure out who she will marry.
If you’re a fan of Scandal and watched any of the last season, you would know that Olivia was faced with the decision of choosing either #TeamFitz or #TeamJake. Two completely different men with different styles and taste. It’s a tough call, but here’s how I would dress Olivia if she were my client.
Jake— laid back, casual, and fun
I believe Olivia would seek to impress Jake by wearing one of my favorite designers – Amsale. This designer always delivers when it comes to beautiful, yet casual frocks.
If you are planning a casual fête in the summer, here are some things to consider:
Opt for cotton dresses. They are prefect for outdoors, light in weight, and easy to care for!
Steer clear of restrictive silhouettes. If you have plans to dance until your feet ache and need room to bust a move, you may want to avoid mermaid and trumpet styles. The ball gown will give you room for a quick two-step.
Fitz—Presidential, formal, traditional
This traditional (white, of course) and formal dress by Marchesa is perfect for any soon-to-be first lady. If you’re the traditional bride, think purity, ultra-feminine, and classic. Olivia would make Fitz swoon walking down the aisle in this number.
Go for white. Choose the whitest shade of this hue your skin tone can manage.
Choose satin and lace. These fabrics are always a plus for the traditional bride along with longer trains and ballgown skirts.
Can’t go wrong with sweetheart –necklines, that is. Sweeheart and modified sweetheart necklines are perfect for this traditional ensemble. The look adds a regal flair to this dress style.
Eddison—Chic and modern
I couldn’t help but to add Senator Eddison into the mix. He’s just so handsome! Here are my picks if she switched gears on us completely and takes his hand in marriage.
Dare to be different. Take a chance and try different textures and silhouettes. These elements can be huge factors for the execution of this look! Consider silhouettes such as the mermaid, trumpet, or fit-and-flare.
Don’t be afraid to play with color. Maybe add a little black accent, such as a pair of long gloves. A staple in Olivia’s wardrobe, the iconic gloves seemed to have sparked a fashion trend and could have possibly inspired Vera Wang’s bridal collection at its debut this spring at Bridal Fashion Week in New York.
A hint of blush in your dress could do the trick, too. Who could forget the stunning dress Kerry wore to the Emmys just a few weeks ago? Simply breathtaking!
