Tell us your love story: Groom: I spotted Ashley on the crowded Panama City Beach during spring break of March 2011. We talked briefly and exchanged contact information. We just communicated via text and small phone calls over the next five months. That December, we decided to meet up half way between Virginia where I lived and Florida where she was attending college at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. This was the beginning of a beautiful long-distance relationship.
When did you know that your partner was the one? Bride: I knew Sylvester was the one when we were leaving his friend’s pinning ceremony in Jacksonville, Florida back in March of 2012. As I drove off, I began to hysterically cry all the way back to Georgia, where I was then residing, because I did not want to leave him again. This was the first time my heart felt this way about someone.
Groom: I knew Ashley was the one when I flew her and her mom up to meet my parents one weekend, especially since I never brought anyone to my parent’s house before. Just like her, when I dropped them off at the airport that Sunday I shed a tear as she boarded the plane.
How did he propose? Bride: Sylvester proposed at my master’s degree graduation dinner in front of our family and friends. He wrote a poem and broke it up for some of our friends to read to me spontaneously. He then finished it and landed on one knee at the end with a ring in an open box. I said yes and we all cried.
What’s the key to the success of your relationship? Bride & Groom: God, communication, and understanding. In that order.
Why do you want to be included in JET love? Bride: We want to be included in JET Love because this magazine has been a part of our lives since we were children. I remember being in my mom’s salon and reading the JET Love section as a little girl and just admiring the beautiful couples that were featured. I always knew in my heart I wanted to become a part of this amazing and long lasting legacy.
