Tell us your love story: Bride: What makes Rashad and I’s story special is that we are high school sweethearts. Yes, we met in high school and begin dating in 1995. Rashad and I both were trying out for a school production called “Friday Night Live” (a play on Saturday Night Live). I was dancing and he was singing. When I laid eyes on him at auditions, I knew he was the one.
When did you know that your partner was the one? Bride: After we exchanged numbers the night of the performance, we talked all night until the sun rose the next day. We had so much in common from musical tastes, philosophical beliefs, and opinions on all forms of Black art.
What was your most memorable moment from your wedding day? Bride: When I laid eyes on him at the end of that aisle. It was so magical. As “The Makings of You” by Gladys Knight played in the background and I zeroed in on Rashad, nothing else even mattered. When he began to shed tears, I lost it. Talk about water works!
What’s the key to success in your relationship? Bride: As a young woman, my grandmother and some other wise women always told me to take my time with a man before jumping head first into marriage. They would say, “Build your friendship and make sure not to feel pressured by the world to do things their way.” So Rashad and I did things our way! Rashad and I have always had a great relationship, helping one another build our individual dreams while at the same time loving one another unconditionally and on purpose. I can honestly say that I would not have done anything differently because that is what made our day so special and spiritual! We respect each other’s differences but at the same time, love one another unconditionally. We are best friends!
