Kerensa Jackson & Todd Burton

Venue: Hope Community Advent Church in Chicago, IL

Honeymoon: Caribbean Cruise

Home: Riverdale, IL

Kerensa is a paralegal for the state of Illinois. Todd is a network engineer for Verizon. When Kerensa sent Todd a Facebook friend request, she thought he was a pal from college. She later realized Todd wasn’t her former classmate, yet the mutual attraction encouraged them to correspond. After over three years of courting, the pair wed believing they were made for one another.

He knew he was in love when…

She helped his mom with throwing him a surprise birthday party.

She knew she was in love when…

Just before they started dating, her father had suffered a debilitating stroke and was in a VA nursing home in downstate Missouri. Her dad needed to learn how to walk, talk and write again. She really wanted to go check on her father to make sure his therapy was going well and to bolster his spirits. Todd took some of his vacation time, helped Kerensa pay for the gas and hotel as well as driving some of the 10 hours it took to drive to see her dad. While they were there, Todd helped get her dad in out of his wheelchair, the bed and the car as they took him around the facility and the town without complaint. Kerensa is an only child so she was really grateful that he helped her surprise her dad with that visit. Both Kerensa and her dad both fell in love with Todd during that trip. On the way back, the pair were on the outer edge of the tornado storm that hit Joplin, MO. Kerensa is scared of driving in thunderstorms but Todd was there to help her get through it all. She would have never been able to make that emotional journey on her own. They had only known each other for about seven weeks when they took that trip.

In 10 years we will…

Prayerfully be living in our first home, will have been blessed with some children and working toward building a strong, proud Christian family.

Before the groom got married, he wishes someone had told him…

To get his handyman/repairman skills and tools together.

Before the bride got married, she wishes someone had told her…

To sit in the kitchen with her mom and his mom to learn all the best recipes and the value of weekly meal planning.

Our favorite activity to do together is…

Watch episodes of Unsung and programs on the History channel.

Our nicknames for each other are…

His favorite nickname for her is “Sugar Chitlin'” because she is sweet and chitterlings are his favorite food and an acquired taste that isn’t for everyone. Her favorite nickname for him is “Honey Bunny” and there is no rhyme or reason behind it, just something she started calling him and it stuck.

Our favorite place to spend time together is…

At home, cuddled up.

Our song is…

“Find Myself In You” by Brian McKnight.

Our perfect date night is…

Not really a night. When we 1st began dating, we lived on opposite ends of the city. She lived on the Evanston-Chicago border and he lived on the Riverdale-Chicago border, so it was difficult to see each other, other than weekends with all of the other obligations in their lives. However, since they both worked in downtown Chicago, they always met up for lunch every Wednesday. They still try to do that at least twice a month. Nowadays, their “date night” is after church on Sunday afternoons when they go out to brunch together.
