Cynthia & Gwenuel Mingo

Celebrating Their 50th Wedding Anniversary

Home: Gainesville, FL

What is key to the success of your marriage?

“We really enjoy being together,” Cynthia reveals. “We love traveling, dancing and being with our two children.”

Why is your mate still the best person for you?

“Because nobody else can put up with me like she does,” Gwenuel jokes. “What I love best is her humble spirit,” he says earnestly.

What legacy do you hope your marriage will leave?

“I hope to answer the question, ‘What’s love got to do with it?’” states Cynthia. “It has everything to do with it.’”

He knew he was in love when…

He did not want to leave her behind after completing advanced training at Ft. Sill and receiving his military orders to go to Germany in 1963. He worked things out with the Army to have her put on concurrent orders and she was able to move to Germany too, thus pushing them to get married within short time period.

She knew she was in love when…

He stayed around Tallahassee for eight days after graduating from FAMU in order to ask for her hand in marriage on her 21st birthday in April of 1963. Her parents considered her “grown” at 21, so he knew that it would be okay to ask at that point. She knew that she loved him and wanted to be with him too, so plans changed to make sure that could happen.

In 10 years we will…

Be doing what we love to do…traveling. We currently love to drive and stop off in different places to eat, visit with friends and family and stay in some of our favorite hotels. But in ten years we will probably take the train or plane for trips.

Before the groom got married, he wishes someone had told him…

About financial planning.

Before the bride got married, she wishes someone had told her…

To pack a suitcase. After going to the apartment following their reception, they had to walk over 4 miles back to her parents’ house to pack a suitcase with her clothes.

Our favorite activity to do together is…

Dancing. We love to dance to various types of music, especially Caribbean music.

Our nicknames for each other are…

“Baby” for both of us, “Honey” for him or sometimes she just calls him “Mingo.”

Our favorite place to spend time together is…

In Savannah, Georgia.

Our song is…

“Endless Love” (the Lionel Richie and Diana Ross version). This is our song because our love has no boundaries…it is endless!

Our perfect date night is…

Friday nights when we try to devote uninterrupted time with each other. We both love football and can sit and watch one game after the other on weekends.
