Baecation: Chanel & Rory
JET loves Black Love. In our newest series, we hear from couples who turned their honeymoon into a permanent voyage. Are you on a baecation? Reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line: Baecation.
Online dating is all the rage, with millions of singles logging on to dating apps each day in hopes of finding “the one.” While many find the online dating world full of undesirables, that didn’t stop 32-year-old Chanel Marshall from taking a chance on Tinder two years ago and swiping herself right into the arms of 35-year-old Rory Thomas.
From their very first date Rory knew Chanel was the one, and even though it took her two more dates, and a De La Soul concert, to be sure, Chanel agreed and now these Tinder lovers are a few months away from their happily ever after. Cheers to that real “Computer Love.”
JET: How did you two meet?
Chanel & Rory: We actually met on Tinder! Yes, it’s possible! #swiperightyall
JET: What was your first vacation together? Why did you pick that location?
Chanel & Rory: Our first trip was to a farm and bed and breakfast in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We wanted a quiet getaway. We went to a drive-in movie, pumpkin picking, wine tasting, and met some interesting couples.
JET: You’re going to be married in a few short months, how has traveling together prepared you for life as husband and wife?
Chanel & Rory: Traveling allows you to see multiple sides of a person. You see how that person reacts when flights are delayed, or if you get lost in an unfamiliar country. Since travel can be unpredictable, it can force you to be flexible and work together.
JET: What have some of the challenges of traveling together been?
Chanel: We honestly travel very well together. I am an AWFUL morning person AND a last minute packer, so that cannot make a pleasant experience for him during our morning flights 🙂
JET: How would you describe your traveling style as a couple? How do you decide where to go?
Chanel & Rory: Low maintenance, flexible, and not afraid to explore. We’re ultimately deal chasers, so we try to catch deals to places we’ve never been together.
JET: What’s your dream honeymoon destination? How have you worked together to make it a reality?
Chanel & Rory: If we had unlimited resources, we would surely go on a world tour! We were open to a honeymoon destination, with our eyes initially on Thailand. We ultimately said that we would let a deal determine where we go. An excellent deal to Hong Kong fell in our laps, so we booked it. We’re going to China!
JET: What advice do you have for traveling as a couple?
Chanel & Rory: We think compromise is important. We try to be sure that both of us are represented in the activities and plans. Sometimes you have to be willing to try something that your partner wants that you may not have considered. Being open minded helps for a more adventurous and memorable trip.
JET: Tell us something you learned about each other through travel that you didn’t know before?
Rory: I learned how open she is to new experiences.
Chanel: I was going to say the same thing! I also learned that he enjoys learning about the contributions of people of African descent in the various cities and countries we visit.
JET: How do you envision your travel life changing once you have children?
Chanel & Rory: Both of us travelled as young children, and we would like to pass the love of travel to our children. We don’t anticipate that too much will change, but we realize that we may have to plan more instead of showing up in a city and then figuring it out as we go (which is what we often do). We don’t believe that children should stop the show, just enhance it. We’re not afraid of adventure!
JET: Describe your permanent baecation in three words.
Chanel & Rory: Learning. Loving. Laughing.
