Venus Williams Holding Court
Most top athletes speak about the importance of being fearless as one of the keys to their success. But for Venus Williams, there’s one frightening thought that keeps her up at night: being a statistic. “My parents taught us to think about how we were spending, or who we were hanging out with,” she explains. “My dad always showed us stories about athletes who have fallen, so he kept us on our toes. You can’t ever say, ‘This can’t be me.’”

“For me, being young, rich and powerful is all about how you represent yourself and where you came from, and not forgetting any of that,” she reasons. “But also trying to be somewhat conservative because if not you will find yourself in a major hole. There’s a lot that can happen if you don’t pace yourself and look at things from all angles.”
