Spotlight On Singer Luke James

Don’t be surprised if you hear Luke James singing about fighting the power.
“I’m inspired by Marvin Gaye,” the 27-year-old offers. And the Mercury records artist hopes his work will have the same effect. Like many singers, his story begins at the world-famous Apollo Theater— sorta. “I saw a man performing a record by Donny Hathaway, and it blew the crowd away,” he recalls. “I wanted to move people the way he did.” By high school James was a part of a singing group that made the rounds in their native new orleans. The kids squatted outside a Brian McKnight concert — crooning the whole time — and scored a manager.
