Spotlight On Pianist Robert Glasper
By//S. Tia Brown
Robert Glasper may seem like a music geek— he did score full scholarships to Berklee College of Music and The New School— but the pianist isn’t claiming that title. “There was a time when jazz players were the coolest cats around. They set the trends, including style,” he declares. Nowadays, the Houston native is leading the charge to reclaim his genre’s influencer status. At 33, Glasper, the son of the late soul singer Kim Yvette Glasper, is riding high on the crossover merits of his latest album, Black Radio, which hit No. 4 on the R&B/hip-hop charts, No. 15 on Billboard’s Top 200 and No. 1 on U.S. jazz charts.
