Eve Chats New Sound, Business Ventures

Grammy-winning rapper Eve is a bona fide music industry veteran. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t get anxious. The Philly-bred MC recently released her first album in a decade. Platinum plaques, hit movies and a television series be damned— she has to deliver the goods with Lip Lock. “I was supposed to put out an album in 2007, but it just didn’t happen,” Eve confesses about her extended musical gap. “But now I’m back. It’s exciting.”

The former Ruff Ryders front woman returns with an eclectic sound and is on her own label, From the Ribs Music. But are fans ready for this version of Eve? “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried,” she admits. “I understand them wanting what they might have fallen in love with, but at the same time if I pretended to be that person I would be doing a disservice to myself and to them.”

On Lip Lock the rapper’s signature cockiness is amplified against a slew of international beats that were influenced by her move to London in 2012 to be with her British beau, Maximillion Cooper. “I have spent a lot of my time in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, so I needed to do a global album,” she says of her new direction.

Though the project includes guest appearances from previous collaborators like Missy Elliott and Snoop Lion, Eve’s Ruff Ryder comrades are absent this time around. “I felt like I needed to do something on my own,” she says of her former label mates. “But I’m sure at some point we’ll get back together.” The reunion will have to wait. In addition to running a label and promoting her album, Eve is still actively pursuing her acting career.
