Going to jail for a dime bag could go up in smoke— at least in Chicago. In June, the City Council voted 44-3 to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.Beginning on August 4, Chicago Police will be authorized to issue tickets ranging from $250 to $500 to offenders caught with less than 15 grams of marijuana.
While some debate whether the change will inadvertently send a message to the younger generation that possession of marijuana is acceptable, the new policy is widely seen by many in the city’s minority communities as a welcomed reform. Under the former law, 86% of those convicted of marijuana possession were Black males.
