It’s safe to say that Marlon Wayans has a thing for horror films. After mocking the genre with the Scary Movie
series, the youngest sibling of the Wayans clan is back to poke fun at found footage-style flicks with A Haunted House (out January 11). But don’t expect this to be anything like the 40-year-old’s previous work.
“I did a horror comedy instead of a parody,” Wayans explains. “It’s Paranormal Activity if it happened to a Black couple and that idea— what the Black experience would be like— is funny for people of all colors.”
Co-writing a feature that revolves around himself and popular actors such as Cedric the Entertainer and Essence Atkins was difficult, but not for the reason you might think. “The hardest part was finding a way to keep those brothas in the house,” Wayans laughs. “Black people’s instinct is to leave in the first five minutes of danger.”
