A few years ago, Dr. Boyce Watkins became a freedom fighter. The first person the finance professor wanted to liberate was himself. “I dealt with racism in academia. But I decided not to live like a high-paid slave,” the 41-year-old says of his change in focus from education to action. “Ironically, most business professors have never owned or operated a business.”
In 2010, Watkins re-launched his news and lifestyle website, yourblackworld.net. It has quickly become a go-to online destination for all things impacting our community— for us and by us. The Louisville, KY native plans to keep it that way. “We maintain an independent voice where we can share any perspective without being put in a box,” says Watkins, who recently teamed up with entrepreneur Russell Simmons. “Ownership is key. We may make a little less, but we have something we can pass down.”

Our End Mass Incarceration initiative pushes for a shift from the punishment model to one that ends recidivism. We also advocate for the availability of services that will help make people adequate husbands, wives, fathers and mothers.
