Scenes from The Chicago Crusader’s 75th Anniversary

JET wants to congratulate the Chicago Crusader as the institution celebrates 75 years! The newspaper, founded by the late Balm Leavell in 1940, has been capturing the African-American experience for decades.

Now spearheaded by Dorothy R. Leavell, the wife of Mr. Leavell, the publication has continued to lead the change.

“We are proud and also delighted to celebrate The Crusader’s 75th Anniversary,” says Leavell. “For 75 years, the publication has reported the news without fear or favor, and we have been a community resource to tell ‘our story’ from a Black perspective.

To commemorate the joyous occasion, Mrs. Leavell hosted a gala to enjoy the milestone with hundreds of community, political, religious and business leaders. Take a look at some of the photos below, and #supportblackpress.
