Common Ground Hosts 5th Annual Awards Gala
The Common Ground Foundation hosted their 5th annual awards gala and fundraiser this past weekend. This year’s theme was ‘La Vie En Rose’ and the event was emcee’d by “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Meet The Browns” star Lamman Rucker. The festivities, attended by our own Vice President and Head of Digital Editorial Kyra Kyles, honored both movers-and-shakers, plus young future leaders from Chicago’s West Side and South Side neighborhoods.
The teens who benefited from Common’s program drew hearty cheers and whistles as many of them announced their college plans (complete with full scholarships) and introduced guests with confidence and skill they attributed to the mentorship efforts of Common Ground.
Kim Foxx, candidate for the Cook County State’s Attorney in Chicago, and BLACK GIRLS ROCK! founder Beverly Bond were among the leaders honored at the event. Actor/musician Common was also onstage throughout, along with his mother Dr. Mahalia Hines, who are founders of the foundation. Common even broke out an impressive freestyle about the state of Black Lives Matters, though he asked guests not to record it until it was ready for primetime.
Guests enjoyed red carpet arrivals, cocktails and cuisine, a formal awards program, and an afterparty bash– all within the Hotel Raddison Aqua Blu. Check out the photos from the empowering event below!
