Zoe Saldana has finally responded to the controversy surrounding her role as Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic about the deceased soul singer.
Folks on the internet were up in arms when the 34-year-old actress landed the gig after Mary J. Blige bowed out. Many believed that the Afro-Latino Saldana would be unable to authentically play the role because she is not a singer and doesn’t bear any resemblance to Simone.
Luckily, Saldana has been able to keep a level head and not let the controversy get to her. In an interview with Hip Hollywood Saldana said that she had no regrets about taking on the role. “I did it all out of love for my people and my pride of being a black woman and a Latina woman and an American woman and that’s my truth.”
