Zendaya to Play Spider-Man’s Love Interest
After announcing Disney channel star Zendaya Coleman would be joining the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, Spider-Man: Homecoming, we now know what part she’ll play.
The singer and actress will assume the iconic role of Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s long-time love interest, according to The Wrap. The relaunched franchise will center on a teenage Parker as he navigates high school and fights crime.
Once the word of Coleman’s casting hit the web, Twitter users celebrated the news.

Of course, not everyone was happy. Some folks were salty Zendaya–a biracial woman who identifies as Black–would be taking on the role once held by Kirsten Dunst.
@SpiderMan_News Like it or Not Marry Jane isn’t Black. This is like a Jordan movie where a white guy acts as Jordan… Ridiculous

While the 19-year-old actress may be a different kind of choice for some, her outspoken, fearless nature makes her a natural fit for a superhero film.
Despite the haters, we’re here for Zendaya as Mary Jane Watson.
