Zendaya Bows Out of Aaliyah Biopic
It looks like the Lifetime Aaliyah biopic has taken a giant step backward: Zendaya won’t be portraying the late singer after all.
The Disney star announced Sunday that she pulled out of the project due to production issues.
“I didn’t feel like it was all the way there, so I didn’t want to do that. And when the time comes when it’s done right and it’s 100 percent, by all means, I will be the first person there ready to go,” Zendaya said before going into the BET Awards. “I just think she deserves the world. She deserves something really, really incredible and so I would rather wait for that.”
The film has been off to a rocky start. In the midst of receiving backlash for its selection of the lead role, production also garnered negative responses from the late singer’s family, who own and aren’t releasing the rights to Aaliyah’s music.
Lifetime responded to the 17-year-old’s announcement on Twitter saying, “We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold.”
Filming was set to begin this summer.
