So the rumors were true about Will Smith originally being cast as Django in Quentin Tarantino’s slavery western Django Unchained. While Jamie Foxx eventually took on the role and gained an Academy Award nomination for his performance, Smith told Entertainment Weekly that he turned down the part after learning the Django wasn’t the true lead of the film.

“Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead,” he told EW. “The other character was the lead!” he said, referring to Christoph Waltz’s character (which scored him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor).

Still, Smith said he enjoyed the film.

“I thought it was brilliant,” he said. “Just not for me.”
