Watch: Queen Latifah Defends Gay Scenes in ‘Bessie’
Queen Latifah is set to star as Bessie Smith in the HBO-produced biopic, Bessie.
The story is based on the life of the famed early 20th Century blues singer, whose life was anything but traditional.
During an interview with BET’s Clay Kane, Latifah said that people shouldn’t be caught off guard by what they see in the film, particularly the lesbian love scenes:
“It shouldn’t even be a discussion. But it is, because people are still curious, and people still wonder how they feel about things. At the end of the day I don’t really care if someone feels uncomfortable about it. It is what it is, and it’s life. So you either deal with it or not. It’s just part of who she is, and I had to tell the story honestly.”
Latifah also talked about how the role stretched her as an actress.
“I had to go to a lot of different layers, I had to let it all hang out,” Latifah told Kane. “People will see me in a different way than they have as an actor.”
