Sneak Peek: VH1’s Hip-Hop Drama, ‘The Breaks’

Music films are all the rage these days. From the success of Straight Out of Compton on the big screen, and BET’s The New Edition Story and Fox’s Empire on the small screen, it’s clear people love to watch the stories of their favorite groups play out.

While VH1 has produced its fair share of music biopics–like the film about Atlanta girl group TLC–the network has also created original programming that appeals to music fans. Last year, VH1 rolled out The Breaks, a film about three friends in New York who are grinding it out, hoping to find success in the rap world. The movie brought in a hefty 2.6 million viewers, enough to make it the No. 2 original cable movie of 2016 among adults 18-49, according to Shadow & Act. The success of the film promoted the network to turn it into a series.

Starring Afton Williamson, Tristan “Mack” Wilds, Antoine Harris, Teyana Taylor, David Call, and Wood Harris, The Breaks premieres on VHI next month.

Take a look at a pair of teasers below:

The Breaks premieres February 20th at 9/8c on VH1
