Vh1 = The New BET?
It appears as though Vh1 has found the magic formula for a successful series: feature Black reality stars.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable network is “up 20 percent in primetime among adults 18-49 in 2014 — the biggest rise among the top 25 basic cable nets,” thanks in part to reality shows Love & Hip Hop and Basketball Wives, which star Black celebrities.
Meanwhile, Vh1’s new shows featuring primarily White stars (LeAnn & Eddie, Candidly Nicole and Dating Naked) have failed to match the success of the Love & Hip Hop and Basketball Wives franchises.
Earlier this year, the network’s originals executive vice president Susan Levison said: “The goal is to bring a general market audience back into the fold in addition to servicing our African-American audience.”
Will the trend continue? Only time will tell. Let us know what you think in the comments!
