Tyler The Creator: ‘F*** Boyce Watkins’
Tyler, The Creator is no stranger to controversy. In fact, he creates it with the words that fly out of his mouth most of the time.
It turns out the Odd Future rapper is still pretty mad at Dr. Boyce Watkins for his role in the entertainer losing a deal with Mountain Dew.
In 2013 as part of the collaboration with the brand, Tyler directed a series of commercials for the company, but the ads were pulled after Watkins and others complained about the content being racist and misogynistic.
Watkins said the work was “arguably the most racist commercial in history.” Tyler, The Creator responded to the criticism by stating that “It’s a young Black man who got out of the hood and made something of himself…But instead of looking at the positivity from that, [Watkins is] trying to boycott Mountain Dew.”
Ultimately, the brand cut ties with Tyler.
Recently, Tyler appeared on Hot 97 for an interview. During the conversation, the subject of the commercial controversy was brought up.
Tyler expressed his issues with Watkins not reaching out to him directly. He also made it clear that he did not apologize for his creative work.
“I never apologized for that s***,” said Tyler. “What am I apologizing for? I did nothing wrong. N***** was like, ‘We should put out a statement.’ I’m not doing s***. I’m not out here shooting n*****. It’s little kids that hang out where our store used to be. Every time I see them kids I say, ‘Don’t do drugs.’ I’m out here trying to tell kids, ‘Don’t f*** up.’ I’m out here not promoting f***** up s***, and for someone like that to look pass all of that and point out some bulls*** – f*** that. F*** Boyce Watkins. He’s a b****. His daughter’s a fan.
