Tika Sumpter Outraged Over Mom’s Arrest

Tika Sumpter’s mother was arrested.

Did she commit an actual crime? Now that’s a different story.

The Southside With You actress took to Twitter, Monday to share that her mother, Janice Acquista – a retired corrections officer, who has no criminal record, was arrested in North Carolina over a $10 fee for an overdue library book.

The arrest took place in Johnson County, N.C. and was on behalf of the Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield. The libraries site mentions a 25-cent daily fine for overdue books and 50 cents every 24 hours for audio books, CDs and movies. No where on the site, however, is there mention of an arrest for late returns.

Nevertheless, there Mama Sumpter was wearing handcuffs. “Treated like a criminal for a late fee of 10 dollars for overdue books at the library,” Sumpter’s tweets read. “Libraries now put out warrants.”

After all the harassment, turns out the late-fee wasn’t even the fault of Sumpter’s mother. The book was returned a long time ago, but someone working at the library never entered it into the system.

But that didn’t put an end to the drama. According to NY Daily News, officers at the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said that the arrest was filed because Ms. Acquista wrote a check that bounced and never made good on the payment afterward.

Clearly, these libraries aren’t playing any games.
