We Have Thoughts About BET’s ‘Tales’

Irv Gotti just remixed R.Kelly’s “Trapped In the Closet” with Carmen: A Hip Hopera and gave us BET’s new series, Tales.

With BET’s former President of Programming Stephen Hill out, we were all a bit concerned about what we would see next on the network. In recent years, BET has done a ton of revamping, bringing us Being Mary Jane, the beloved Real Husbands of Hollywood, the HBCU set drama The Quad, John Singleton’s Rebel and of course the thrilling biopic, The New Edition Story. Now, with Irv Gotti’s new series Tales, we are getting something else entirely. Quiet frankly, our minds are blown.

Tales is a new hour-long anthology series from Gotti’s Visionary Ideas production company. The show will adapt the lyrics of classic hip-hop songs into three-act, 60-minute films. So far we know we will see N.W.A’s “F*ck Tha Police” and Beyoncé and Jay Z’s “On the Run” come to life. Helmed by a new cast and crew each week, we do know that Jermel Howard, Lance Gross, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Woody McClain, and Tammy Rivera among others will have roles on Tales. Peep the first teaser trailer for yourself below.

There is so much happening in the teaser that we’re not quite sure what to think yet, but we do know, Tales is giving us BET: Uncut vibes. We aren’t saying we won’t be watching it because obviously the hip-hop, drugs, sex, and violence definitely have our attention, but we must admit we did not see this one coming from BET.
