After the debut of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Star-Lord and his friends are saying goodbye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Guardians of the Galaxy films which star Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, and Zoe Saldana have been some of the most critically acclaimed Marvel movies. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will hit screens May 5th, and earlier this year the film scored an almost unheard of 100% at a test screening. However, it looks like director James Gunn is ready to let the films go out with a bang. Earlier this week, Gunn announced his plans to conclude the trilogy on Facebook. He said
“So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula — and some of the other forthcoming heroes — goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.”
He went on to drop a bomb of galactic proportions by saying,
“[Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3] will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond,” he wrote. “I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.”
Since Guardians of the Galaxy is one of our favorite franchises within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we are definitely sad it’s ending a lot sooner than we expected. However, as Marvel moves from Phase Three into the next phase, it can only mean that many more stories, superheroes, and characters will get their chance to shine.
