This Could Be Magical! Will Smith Might Play Genie In Disney’s Live-Action ‘Aladdin’
Disney’s classic animated film Aladdin is about to get the live-action treatment, and Will Smith might be getting in on all of the magic.
Though he recently pulled out of voicing Dumbo in Disney’s live-action film of the same name, it looks like Will Smith isn’t closing the door on the magic kingdom just yet. It appears that the beloved studio just might have found their new Genie.
Directed Guy Ritchie, Aladdin will feature two Middle Eastern actors as Jasmine and Aladdin. It will bring the magical story of the pauper from Agrabah and the princess he fell in love with to life for a 21st-cenury audience. Production on the film is set to begin in July, so obviously the studio and Ritchie are scrambling to find Genie, the character that the late Robin Williams made iconic in the 1992 original film.
Though talks with the former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are still in the earlier stages, we can certainly see Smith returning to his comedic roots and bringing Genie to life with his very own flair. Still, we must admit we are concerned about the singing aspects of the character. We really don’t need a rapping Genie.
If Smith does end up taking the part, Ritchie will have an extremely diverse film on his hands. However, we aren’t exactly sure what a live-action Genie is going to look like. The star could either be CGI’d up, or they might be letting him borrow his wardrobe from Sinbad’s much-debated film, Shazam?
Still, if Disney and Smith can’t come to some sort of agreement, they just need to go ahead and call Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart who is absolutely killing it as the Genie on Broadway.
