The Weeknd Donates $250K to Black Lives Matter

Toronto’s very own popular crooner The Weeknd is known for singing about partying, girls, and getting way too lit, but he’s also very aware of the issues facing Black folks.

Raised by Ethiopian parents who migrated to Canada, The Weeknd–born Abel Tesfay–recently gave $250,000 to the Black Lives Matter network, according to The Fader. The gift came just days after he donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to establish an Ethiopian studies program.

While some may think The Weeknd’s generous donation is surprising, given the content of his music, the singer has been quite outspoken on the web. After the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, The Weeknd took to Twitter to express his frustration.

He followed it up with another tweet aimed directly at law enforcement.

Salute to The Weeknd! Let’s hope more artists follow suit.
