‘The Preacher’s Wife’ Gets Musical Treatment
Courtney B. Vance and Whitney Houston gave us a heartfelt story when they starred in the 1996 film, The Preacher’s Wife. Denzel Washington was also a part of the cast and added an “angelic” touch to the holiday flick.
The romantic comedy centered on a pastor (Vance) whose church is facing multiple challenges –a declining membership being one of them. In the midst of the church trials, his marriage to Julia (Houston) has also hit a rough patch. During prayer, he asks God for help and in return receives an angel named Dudley (Washington). Somewhere along the line, Dudley and Julia build a friendly relationship and we discover Julia’s singing talent and possible solution to help her husband.
This story of faith an love is now prepping for its Broadway debut. Under the leadership of Tituss Burgess, star of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and 30 Rock, the movie is being transformed into a musical starring Ledisi and Loretta Devine.
Burgess will kick off an investors’ audition of The Preacher’s Wife on Sept. 12 in New York.
