‘The Color Purple’ Has A New ‘Suge’

As Jennifer Hudson approaches the end of her run as the jazzy, sensual “Suge Avery” in the Broadway musical hit, The Color Purple, a new Suge is gearing to make her entrance.

That’s right beginning May 10, Heather Headley will step in to the role. The Tony and Grammy award winning artist will join the likes of Danielle Brooks (OITNB) and British singer-songwriter Cynthia Erivo.

Heather’s part in the critically acclaimed production marks her first appearance on Broadway since 2000, where she took home a Tony for her performance in Aida.

Now, many may remember Heather’s floating and strong vocals belting out songs such as “In My Mind” and “Me Time”, but the Trinidadian-American entertainer got her start on Broadway debuting as Nala in the original Broadway cast of Elton John and Tim Rice’s The Lion King musical.

And because it’s #TBT, here’s a clip of Heather performing ‘Easy as Life’ from Aida.
