Terrence Howard has been killing the game for years in various gritty roles from Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ to Hustle & Flow, and now as the vicious patriarch Lucious Lyon on FOX’s Empire. Now, it looks like the Academy Award nominee has set sights on an entirely different role in the forthcoming tearjerker, Life In A Year.

Howard will play the proud, no-nonsense father of Jaden Smith’s character Daryn, a 17-year old who is heartbroken to learn that his girlfriend (Cara Delevigne) is dying of cancer. Desperate to make the most of their time together, the pair set out to experience their dream life in the 12 months that they have left. It sounds like a mix between Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything which will be headed to the big screen with Anika Noni Rose and Amandla Stenberg starring, and The Fault in Our Stars.

Life In A Year will definitely be a new turn for Howard, who has really been focused on his role on Empire in the past several years. Likewise, though Jaden Smith is currently stealing our hearts as the graffiti loving Dizzee in Netflix’s ’70s set musical drama The Get Down, he hasn’t been seen on the big screen since his role in After Earth.

In 2013, Smith co-starred in After Earth with his father Will Smith, and unfortunately, the futuristic sci-fi film bombed at the box office. Hopefully, Life In A Year will remind the world just how talented both Howard and Smith are. The film is set to go into production this spring for a 2018 release date. Until then, you can catch Jaden Smith in The Get Down which is currently streaming on Netflix and, you can find Terrence Howard on Empire, every Wednesday evening on FOX.
