3. Azealia Banks
Never one to bite her tongue (on any subject), Azealia Banks spoke out against designers Dolce & Gabbana after seeing their controversial Spring 2013 collection which she deemed “racist.” The fashion show included garments featuring Blackamoor imagery which caused uproar because of their resemblance to mammy-like figures. Banks took to Twitter to reveal her disgust: “I really hate when people do corny, racist things then try to justify it as ‘art.'” She later wrote she was “definitely boycotting Dolce & Gabanna,” which could totally have impact because of her legit status amongst the fashion elite.
Banks also called out fellow female rapper Iggy Azalea after XXL unveiled the Australian MC as a part of their annual Freshman cover issue (the only woman to make the cover that year). Banks tweeted, “Iggy Azalea on the XXL freshman list is all wrong…How can you endorse a White woman who called herself a ‘runaway slave master’?” Banks was referring to a lyric in Azalea’s song “D.R.U.G.S.” Azalea later explained that she was reciting the same verse Kendrick Lamar raps in his song “Look Out for Detox” with a slight twist but her intention was not racist. However, the beef between the two remains strong.
