Ta- Nehisi Coates Gains MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant
Writer and Journalist, Ta-Nehisi Coates is having a phenomenal year.
As he continues to pen in-depth and analytical articles for The Atlantic, where he serves as a national correspondent, his work as an author is also gaining praise and momentum.
Known for his critiques and reflective writings on systematic racism, reparations, and racial identity, the West Baltimore native has been recognized as a 2015 MacArthur fellow.
As one of the 24 recipients, Coates will receive a no-strings attached stipend of $625,000, which will be paid out over five years, reports the Guardian.
“When someone makes this sort of investment in your, you’re really called to do something great,” Coates expressed to the Guardian. “I’m going to try to do something great. That really is the bottom line for me in my field; I feel like I’m always called to do that.”
